Oncology ON1064

A New Era of Physician Leadership for a 50-Year Cancer Program | Maintain Your Practice

Tulsa, Oklahoma

Schedule a 15m call

This is an opportunity for a physician leader to guide the next stage of an established cancer program with a 50-year history.

The program has experienced physicians, established patient demand, multidisciplinary services and significant oncology infrastructure. Physicians already collaborate through tumor boards and patient care. What the program has not had is a physician leader with a view across its cancer services to help set shared priorities and guide future development.

The Director can continue to see patients while taking on a broader leadership role. The work will include building alignment across specialties, improving access, supporting planned provider growth and helping shape the program's future.

This is a busy oncology program with increasing demand. New-patient waits are longer than the program would like, so approximately five additional oncologists are being added. Improving access and building capacity will be near-term priorities.

The Director will also help develop clinical research and trial access, advance quality and accreditation efforts, and define the Cancer Center's role in regional cancer care. Success will depend in part on the ability to lead through collaboration and influence, including with physicians who do not report directly to the Director.

The first-year compensation package is designed to provide transition without taking a step backward financially from a high-earning clinical practice.

Why you’ll love this role

  • Existing cancer center within a health system with absolutely zero debt
  • Approximately 11 hematology and oncology physicians and five APPs
  • Ongoing recruitment to add approximately five oncologists
  • About 40 infusion chairs
  • Multidisciplinary tumor boards in breast, lung, gastrointestinal and general oncology
  • Established collaboration across radiation oncology, gynecologic oncology, palliative care, surgical oncology, breast surgery and pulmonary medicine
  • Executive sponsorship and investment in oncology facilities and infrastructure
  • A system committed to providing care regardless of a patient's ability to pay

Tulsa

Tulsa offers the amenities of a major metro area with a more manageable day-to-day pace. The region has more than 1 million residents with established suburban communities, attainable housing and short commutes.

Residents can enjoy river trails, the Gathering Place, parks, museums, live music, concerts and a varied and diverse restaurant scene. The thriving local economy also includes energy, aerospace, finance, manufacturing and technology, which may be relevant for a relocating partner or family.

The ideal candidate

  • A board-certified medical, surgical or gynecologic oncologist who aspires to maintain a clinical practice while taking on broader program leadership
  • At least five years of oncology experience and meaningful leadership or program-development responsibility
  • Current Cancer Center Directors, as well as division chiefs, service-line leaders, disease-site program leaders and other physicians ready to take on a broader role. Relatively new leaders are encouraged to inquire.
  • Comfortable building alignment across disciplines, leading through influence and helping a strong existing program develop a clearer shared direction
  • MD or DO from an accredited medical school

I’ve worked with physician opportunities across the country, and it is rare to find a model that combines a thriving established cancer center, a first-time leadership mandate and the ability to maintain a clinical practice. For oncologists with experience building something inside a cancer program who want a first-of-its-kind leadership role on a platform that is established rather than in need of rescue, this is a conversation worth having.
